Nardong Putik met his end on the fateful day of the 11th of October, 1971.
It was the end of Nardong Putik—“Muddy Leonard”— whose full name was Leonardo Manecio. Putik credited his ability to survive and escape numerous ambushes and gunfights to his anting-anting (amulet). Nardong Putik ability to elude the law and his enemies made him a legend to many people.
Morning of that momentous October day, a joint PC-NBI force was manning a spot between the highways of Panamitan and Tabon in the Cavite town of Kawit. It was reported that a red Chevrolet Impala car driven by Nardong Putik failed to obey the signal of the operatives to stop. This was enough to prompt them to fire at the speeding car. Minutes of nonstop gunfire then ceased. When the lawmen approached the bullet-riddled car, the bloodied occupant’s face was badly mutilated, beyond recognition.
