Mother's Day

ni Nestor Leynes

The second Sunday of the month of May is when we celebrate Mother's Day.
Historians claim that the holiday of Mother's Day emerged from the ancient festivals dedicated to mother goddess.

Julia Ward Howe was the first person known to make this suggestion for a Mother's Day. In 1872, she put forth the proposition to observe June 2nd as a day of peace to honor mothers.
In the United States,

Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) is credited with bringing in the celebration of Mother's day.
Anna Jarvis began a campaign for a nationwide observance of Mother's Day in 1904. She chose the second Sunday in May, and started the custom of wearing a carnation. A white carnation is worn if the person's mother is deceased, and a colored one (usually red) is worn if the person's mother is still living.Jarvis' own Mother was honored on the first service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton,West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Later, at the general assembly in 1912, a delegate from Andrews Church introduced a resolution recognizing Jarvis as the founder of Mother's Day, and suggested that Mother's Day be observed on the second Sunday in May.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day an annual national observance on May 9, 1914.

Mother's Day here in the Philippines will be on May 8

Music by Lucio San PedroLyrics by Levi Celerio

Puso kong may dusa
